ARM, LEG AND HEIGHT LENGTHENING SURGERY
As a person grows, increase in height occurs with the formation of bones in the growth plates that are located in the end parts of the arm and leg bones. Physiological elongation is accelerated especially in puberty and is completed by the closing of growth plates around the age of 18. Not only elongation stops after this age but also there is no other option but surgery regarding it.Arms and legs can be enlengthened via surgery. Whereas the lengthening of height is actually the surgical lengthening of both leg bones. During this prolongation, the arm, leg and the overall height is elongated with the other leg tissues. The most advanced techniques are applied in surgery. The operation is performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia. This is mutually decided by the anesthesist and the patient. Our operation is usually conducted under tourniquet and bloodless surgery is performed. Therefore, bleeding is very low. The patient does not need to be given blood.
Arm-Leg Lengthening:
If the amount of bone that is considered for a lengthening is to be extended up to 5 cm, a one-level incision is made whereas for more than 5 cm, a two-level incision is made. According to patient’s body weight, two or three nails are applied to each side of the area to be cut before the cutting of the body. Suitable holyfix fixator is prepared and applied.
For the operation, the skin cuts are 3-4 cm for each level and they are stitched aesthetically from the inside and there are no stitches to be removed. Single-zone arm-leg lengthening takes average 40 minutes, double-zone single arm-leg extension takes approximately 60 minutes.
Height Lengthening:
The height lengthening process is the lengthening process of both legs. When both legs are lengthened at the same time the height is also lengthened. The lengthening process for a single level takes 90 minutes (up to 5 cm) and 2-2,5 hours for a double level. (up to 10 cm).
Hospitalization
If one arm or leg is to be lengthened the duration of stay is 2 or 3 days. If the height is to be lengthened the duration of stay is 4-7 days.
SCOLIOSIS SURGERY
In the treatment of scoliosis, surgical treatment comes on the agenda only for curvatures that are of 40 degrees or above. In patients where the desired results can’t be obtained despite conservative treatments, treatment programs are planned with the most advanced surgical methods. Depending on the length of the scoliosis curve and the number of vertebrae that needs to be boiled together, scoliosis surgery may take between 4 and 8 hours.
